Versatile Virginia prospect gives Irish a wealth of options

Wednesday, January 15, 2014 - 3:14 pm

The News-Sentinel sports staff will feature a different verbally committed player for the four NCAA Division I football programs (Ball State, Indiana Notre Dame and Purdue) in Indiana leading up to National Signing Day on Feb. 5.

Here is today's Notre Dame featured commit:

GREER MARTINI

Position: Linebacker

High School: Woodberry Forest School in Woodberry Forest, Virginia<

Height: 6-foot-3

Weight: 230 pounds

Commitment date: July 3, 2012

Other scholarship offers: Maryland, N.C. State and William & Mary

Ranking: Rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.com and the No. 30 player in the state of Virginia; rated a four-star prospect by Scout.com and the No. 28 outside linebacker in the country.

Notre Dame depth chart at position: Outside linebacker: Senior Ishaq Williams, Junior Romeo Okwara, Junior Anthony Rabasa, sophomore Jaylon Smith, junior Ben Councell; Inside linebacker: Junior Jarrett Grace, fifth-year senior Kendall Moore, sophomore Doug Randolph, junior Joe Schmidt, sophomore Michael Deeb.

Scouting report: Each recruiting cycle, coaches look to land at least a few recruits who have the versatility to project at different positions at the college level. Martini is one of those guys for Coach Brian Kelly and Notre Dame. Martini played inside and outside linebacker in high school as well as tight end. He also could project long-term as a defensive end if given a few years to put on weight and develop. The depth at inside linebacker is lacking for 2014, which likely means at least one of the incoming freshmen will see action next season. That could be Martini, but do not be surprised if he preserves a year of eligibility in 2014 with other freshman linebackers stepping up quicker.
