The News-Sentinel sports staff will feature a different verbally committed player for the four NCAA Division I football programs (Ball State, Indiana Notre Dame and Purdue) in Indiana leading up to National Signing Day on Feb. 5.
Here is today's Indiana's featured commit:
Position: Offensive tackle
High School: Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Petersburg, Florida
Weight: 290 pounds
Commitment date: June 21, 2013
Other scholarship offers: 15, including Florida, Florida State and Miami
Ranking: Rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.com; rated a three-star prospect by Scout.com and the No. 42 offensive tackle in the country.
Indiana depth chart at position: Junior Jason Spriggs, redshirt junior Ralston Evans, redshirt junior Peyton Eckert, redshirt sophomore Dimitric Camiel.
Scouting report: Do not underestimate the recruiting coup that Coach Kevin Wilson pulled off with Baker, getting the big and talented Floridian to choose chilly Bloomington over a trio of in-state powers. Baker did not play a snap of football as a senior due to issues involving his transfer to a private school from a public institution. That may be a blessing in disguise for the Hoosiers, who likely would have had to contend with even more suitors if Baker had seen his ranking rise with an impressive senior campaign. As an early-enrollee, Baker will compete this spring for Indiana and could perform well enough to earn some snaps in the regular season. But as is the case with most freshmen linemen, best-case scenario is preserving a year with a redshirt.
