Wide receiver needs to bulk up, but has plenty of speed

Wednesday, January 15, 2014 - 12:01 am

The News-Sentinel sports staff will feature a different verbally committed player for the four NCAA Division I football programs (Ball State, Indiana Notre Dame and Purdue) in Indiana leading up to National Signing Day on Feb. 5.

Here is today's Purdue featured commit:

Position: Wide receiver

High School: First Baptist Academy in Dallas, Texas

Height: 5-foot-11

Weight: 154 pounds

Commitment date: May 4, 2013

Other scholarship offers: Tulane

Ranking: Rated a two-star recruit by; rated a three-star prospect by and the No. 145 wide receiver recruit nationally.

Purdue depth chart at position: Sophomore DeAngelo Yancey, redshirt sophomore Cameron Posey, junior Danny Anthrop, redshirt junior Shane Mikesky, redshirt sophomore B.J. Knauf.

Scouting report: It appears as if the Boilermakers will return their top five wide receivers in terms of performance next season, but for a team that was 77th in the nation in passing, that may not be the best thing. However, it was a young receiving corps last year, one that should get better as it matures. Hart is one of two pure wide receivers in the upcoming recruiting class, with talented athlete Simmie Cobbs also likely to end up at wideout. While currently lacking the physical frame to battle upper-level DBs, Hart is a burner that can run a 4.4 40. With Coach Darrell Hazell desperate to find some playmakers on offense, Hart may get a shot as a freshman, but the better long-term plan would be to redshirt him and allow him to add to his build.
