Illinois athlete could make early impact for Boilers

Sunday, January 19, 2014 - 8:19 pm

The News-Sentinel sports staff will feature a different verbally committed player for the four NCAA Division I football programs (Ball State, Indiana Notre Dame and Purdue) in Indiana leading up to National Signing Day on Feb. 5.

Here is today's Purdue featured commit:

SIMMIE COBBS

Position: Wide receiver

High School: Oak Park River Forest High School, Oak Park, Illinois

Height: 6-foot-4

Weight: 207 pounds

Commitment date: Oct. 17, 2013

Other scholarship offers: Eastern Illinois

Ranking: Rated a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and the No. 27 player in the state of Illinois; rated a three-star prospect by Scout.com and the No. 163 wide receiver in the country.

Purdue depth chart at position: Sophomore DeAngelo Yancey, redshirt sophomore Cameron Posey, junior Danny Anthrop, redshirt junior Shane Mikesky, redshirt sophomore B.J. Knauf.

Scouting report: Cobbs is as college-ready of a wide receiver in terms of size as you could get, with the exception of maybe 10-15 more pounds of muscle. Also a basketball player in high school, Cobbs has showcased his athleticism both on the football field and the basketball court. While Purdue is not hurting for wide receiver depth, the pure size and ability of Cobbs may make it hard to keep him off the field as a true freshman. Cobbs is also used to adversity after he tragically lost his father and skipped around schools at points in his high school career. This is a solid catch by Coach Darrell Hazell, a player that should develop into a real threat on the outside in the Boilermakers offense
