August death of man found in burning car ruled record 45th homicide of 2013

Five months after a man's body was found in a burning car in southern Allen County, the county coroner's office has ruled that his death was a homicide.

Steven Dwayne Turner, 51, of Fort Wayne was found around 6:15 a.m. Aug. 7 in a car just off Ferguson Road near Branstrator Road. The car that was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived to extinguish the fire. The car was found about 25 feet off the north side of Ferguson Road.

An autopsy showed that Turner died from blunt-force trauma to his head.

The ruling makes Turner's death the 45th homicide in Fort Wayne and Allen County in 2013. That is the largest number of homicides ever recorded in Allen County in a year. It remains under investigation.

Turner had no history of violent crimes in his background, according to Allen County court records. Beginning in 1999, he had been charged with several misdemeanor traffic offenses and two Class D felony traffic offenses being a habitual traffic offender, in both cases.
