Hattie A. Moore had a surprise waiting for her at work recently. When the 74-year-old church-going woman arrived her co-workers at the VA hospital all looked at her in surprise and asked how she had gotten out of jail. They had been raising bail money for her.

They had assumed she was the Hattie Moore written about in The News-Sentinel who had been cited with contempt of court for not paying back fines to Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control. That Moore had been sentenced to 30 days in the Allen County Jail. Although the other woman's age, 38, was listed in the story along with a photograph of her, Hattie A. Moore's friends somehow had thought it was her.

Moore said it's not the first time she has been mistaken for another Hattie Moore. A few years ago someone else with her name died and when she went to the V.F.W. Hall one of her friends was amazed.

“This lady said, 'I thought you were dead,'” Moore said.

Moore said she is well known in the community, a volunteer in her church at St. Mary's Catholic, a member of the local V.F.W. and formerly a member of a musical band.

“We had to stop playing because the members started dying off,” Moore said.

Moore said the only time she was arrested was during a civil rights march for the Martin Luther King Jr., and that was 52 years ago.

So Moore said she wants people to please remember the next time you see a Hattie Moore in the newspaper, who is age 38 and owes Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control back fines, it's not her.

And she wants an apology.

We're sorry.
