Local briefs: IPFW athletes earn scholar awards, Saint Francis signs Bellmont golfer

Thirty-five IPFW athletes have been named to the Summit League Distinguished Scholars list, the result of having at least a 3.6 grade-point average in the semester in which they compete. IPFW had the most of any Summit League school.

The honorees, by sport: Women's cross-country: Amaya Ayers, Brittany Beard, Amanda Bell, Kayla Boyes, Alexa Brown, Rachel Kacer, Emma Manchess, Katelyn Simmons, Jordan Tomecek and Rachel Zachar. Men's cross-country: Taylor Crowell, Brandon Perry, Timothy Saltys and Paul Smith. Women's soccer: Meg Brennan, Caroline Castelli, Erin Gill, Rachel Good, Malissa Hofmeister, Alli LaBorde and Gabi Romo. Men's soccer: Kyle Ackerman, Will Brown, Stephen Danielian and Akis Lyrintzis. Women's volleyball: Payton Bowyer, Erica Dryden, Sarah Heckman, Natasha Medic, Jen Milligan, Hallie Ripley, Mallory Slyder, Madison Spence, Kendall Wienkes and Anna Wrede.Bellmont High School senior golfer Chase Ellsworth signed to continue his career next year at the University of Saint Francis. He is a three-time All-Northeast Hoosier Conference golfer who reached the regional level last season and helped the Braves to the team state finals as a sophomore.The Indiana Tech wrestling team moved up to No.8 in the NAIA Wrestling Coaches' Top 20 this week, following a seventh-place finish at the NWCA National Duals and a third-place finish at the Missouri Valley
