DE from Texas has the technique, needs to work on adding weight

Saturday, January 25, 2014 - 9:02 pm

The News-Sentinel sports staff will feature a different verbally committed player for the four NCAA Division I football programs (Ball State, Indiana Notre Dame and Purdue) in Indiana leading up to National Signing Day on Feb. 5.

Here is today's Notre Dame featured commit:

Position: Defensive end

High School: The Colony High School in The Colony, Texas

Height: 6-foot-6

Weight: 252 pounds

Commitment date: July 5, 2013

Other scholarship offers: 25, including Baylor, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Washington.

Ranking: Rated a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, the No. 59 player in the state of Texas and the No. 29 defensive end in the country; rated a four-star prospect by Scout.com and the No. 10 defensive end in the country.

Notre Dame depth chart at position: Junior Sheldon Day, junior Chase Hounshell, sophomore Isaac Rochell, senior Justin Utupo.

Scouting report: A star player on one of the most prestigious high school teams in all of talent-laden Texas, Blankenship is a great get out of the state as he chose Notre Dame over Oklahoma in the end. A good frame with long arms and solid technique, Blankenship should hit the ground running when he arrives in South Bend in the summer. One of the hardest-working players around, he is a player who will frequently make plays on the back side after chasing a play all the way to the other side of the field. Does a good job at attacking blockers off the line and initiating contact, something that can be hard to do for a prep player. One thing that could hold Blankenship back from seeing playing time in his first season would be his strength. While a solid 252 pounds, he will have to put on some significant weight if he is going to see action along the defensive front in 2014.
