The News-Sentinel sports staff will feature a different verbally committed player for the four NCAA Division I football programs (Ball State, Indiana, Notre Dame and Purdue) in Indiana leading up to National Signing Day on Feb. 5.

Here is today's Indiana featured commit:

Height: 5-foot-10

Weight: 207 pounds

Commitment date: January 22, 2014

Other scholarship offers: 14, including Georgia Tech, Louisville, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Missouri, N.C. State and South Florida.

Ranking: Rated a three-star recruit by, the No. 87 player in the state of Florida and the No. 48 safety in the country; rated a two-star prospect by

Indiana depth chart at position: Sophomore Antonio Allen, junior Dawson Fletcher, senior Mark Murphy, redshirt freshman Chase Dutra.

Scouting report: When you end up ranked No. 120 out of 125 Division I teams in pass defense, upgrading the defensive backfield becomes a top priority. Fields represents a big step in that direction on the back end of the defense, choosing the Hoosiers over some solid programs. Fields is a tireless worker who will never have a problem with effort, and he is a quick study who is able to pick up schematics and strategy reasonably quickly. Already with a solid base, Fields will need to put on some additional pounds without giving up much speed. How long that takes remains to be seen, but with the woeful Indiana defense of a year ago, all new faces will likely get a shot to impress in fall camp and potentially earn some playing time as a freshman.
