BLOOMINGTON -- Indiana wrapped up its second straight top-40 football recruiting class, a first in program history.
The Hoosiers signed 14 defensive players and 12 offensive players in a class rated No. 35 by Rivals.com, a national Internet recruiting service.
They consist of six defensive backs, four defensive linemen, four linebackers, four offensive linemen, four wide receivers, two running backs, one tight end and one quarterback.
Six of the players came from Ohio. Five came from Indiana and Georgia. Four came from Florida.
“On paper, these are the best back-to-back classes in school history,” coach Kevin Wilson said. “But that's on paper. We need to take that paper and work with it in the years to come and keep building the program.”
One of those players is South Side standout Donovan Clark, a three-sport athlete (football, basketball, baseball) with a big upside. He's set to play defensive back for the Hoosiers.
Last season Clark played quarterback as well as running back. He recorded 25 tackles and two interceptions. He also rushed for 744 yards and seven touchdowns, caught nine passes for 75 yards, returned seven kicks for 151 yards.
“He's a two-way player," defensive coordinator Brian Knorr said. "He was a great quarterback. He's a dynamic cover guy and a great kick returner. I look for him to provide an element of speed and (physicality) in the secondary.”
Clark's versatility appealed to Wilson even though, at 5-10 and 175 pounds, Clark is the smallest player in the class.
“He's a heck of a basketball and baseball player," Wilson said. "He was a quarterback. He could be a receiver/slot type of guy. I think he's going to be a corner guy for us.
“He's a little bit smaller than some of our other DBs, but he plays with a physical presence. For a small guy, he runs hard. He's not a juke guy. He plays at pad level. When he comes up to hit you, he's very aggressive and assertive. He's not tentative. He's an all-around athlete.
“He's not as long as some of these guys, but he's very fast, a very physical kid. We're excited to have him.”
Knorr, Wilson and offensive coordinator Kevin Johns talked about the rest of the class.
