State warns Indiana residents of jury duty phone scam

INDIANAPOLIS — Callers are trying to get Indiana residents' personal financial data by telling them they owe fines for failing to show up for jury duty, state courts agencies said Friday.

Judges in Henry and Hamilton counties have told the Division of State Court Administration and the Indiana Judicial Center they've received complaints from people who have received such calls.

The callers generally pressure the person to provide financial data such as bank account numbers, credit card information or personal identification numbers (PINs) by telling the resident they must provide that information in order to pay a fine for failing to report for jury duty, the agencies said in a prepared statement.

The joint news release did not say how many people had been targeted. However, it did say officials were not aware of anyone who has been "harmed" by the scam. The Associated Press left a phone message seeking additional information from a spokeswoman for the state courts.

The state said anyone receiving such calls should contact the police.

In Indiana, potential jurors are initially contacted by mail and courts don't ask for their financial information. While persons who fail to attend jury selection can be found in contempt and fined, it isn't done over the phone.

Questions about jury service should be directed to the clerk or court in the county where the individual lives.
