Letter to the editor: Letter shows lack of biblical knowledge

Tuesday, March 18, 2014 - 12:01 am

In her letter of Feb. 28, “You can’t pick and choose biblical laws,” Jane L. Roth assumes that Robert Morris (R-84) is quoting the Holy Bible when he stated that, “Marriage is between a man and a woman.”

That would be correct according to Genesis 2:22. She goes on to state that the Bible is against divorce also; that, too, is correct according to Malachi 2:16. However, her further assumption that Rep. Morris might be interested in also making divorce illegal in the state of Indiana demonstrates not only a lack of biblical knowledge but a total unfamiliarity with the legislative process.

Several thousand years ago, there were the Shammai and Hillel schools of divorce, because even then individuals’ “hearts were hardened” against their mates, and they, too, deserved to start all over again.

And then she queried as to whether or not Rep. Morris would be interested in repealing the death penalty in Indiana, because the Holy Bible states, “Thou shall not kill.” Actually, the sixth commandment says, “Thou shall not murder.” As regards capital punishment, Roth should read Genesis 9:6. Indiana is in good company.

Lastly, Roth says that it is not the Indiana Legislature’s job to “save us.” Certainly not. However, we Christians will pray for you.
