IPFW knocks off Akron to advance in men's tourney

Thursday, March 20, 2014 - 10:17 am

Playing in front one of the biggest crowds in history, IPFW's men's basketball team put on a shooting exhibition en route to a historic win.

IPFW beat Akron 97-91 in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament on Wednesday at the Gates Center. It was the first postseason game for the Dons at the NCAA Division I level. The crowd of more than 1,466 was about 160 short of being a sell-out, Athletic Director Kelley Hartley Hutton said.

The Mastodons (25-10) advance to the second round of the CIT and will play Virginia Military Institute (20-12) at 1 p.m. Saturday in Lexington, Va.

IPFW shot 60 percent from the field and hit 12-of-22 from three-point range. Five Mastodons scored in double figures, led by Luis Jacobo, who hit 10-of-14 shots and scored 23 points. Steve Forbes added 17, Mo Evans 15, Michael Kibiloski 12 and Pierre Bland 10. Kibiloski hit two big three-point shots in a stretch where the Dons seized control.

Demetrius Treadwell led Akron (21-13) with 26 points and Quincy Diggs scored 23.
