Letter to the editor: Sustainability, please

Friday, March 28, 2014 - 12:01 am

The definition of “sustainable” is “a system that maintains its own viability by using techniques that allow for continual reuse.” Sustainable economic development is something I have talked about a lot in my campaign for County Council’s 4th District, and it is something very important to me. Sustainable economic development has been defined by my campaign as an investment in companies that offer premium return on investment through creating well-paying jobs, the ability for County Council to recoup prorated tax-payer funds from companies that do not achieve 100 percent of the success outlined in their taxpayer- funded abatement and investing in companies that implement equal pay for equal work among the men and women in the workplace.

By using these three techniques as a guide to economic development here in Allen County, our community will not only be able to maintain its own viability but will also be able to continually invest in the right companies to help our community shine as a beacon of economic light in the state. By laying out a list of objective requirements for tax abatement applications, we can remove any subjectivity regarding which Allen County businesses get tax benefits. Vote for me this November to help make sustainable economic development a reality here in Allen County.
