A few weeks ago, at the NRA convention, Gov. Mike Pence sold his soul to the gun lobby. Again. And why not. Pence’s Indiana Republican Party has become a bastion of gun worship.
Now we learn that the party’s convention will take place in Fort Wayne and that venues where the gathering will be held are tripping over themselves to reverse their anti-firearms policies. This is important. Apparently the Indiana GOP cannot hold a convention without a plethora of firearms in tow. Concealed or open carry, guns will underpin the proceedings.
The word of God says, “Love thy neighbor.” But who really listens to the word of God? Gov. Pence and his followers adhere to a new teaching: “Fear thy neighbor.” Anyone who looks, speaks or acts “different” fits the category. Should a delegate encounter someone like this in downtown Fort Wayne and feel threatened, he or she may need to stand their ground. Maybe even kill someone.
According to Matthew 26, Jesus declared that those who live by the sword will die by the sword. The gun is far more lethal than the sword — just asks the people of Isla Vista, Calif. But, again, who listens to Jesus? This is the OK Corral, and Gov. Pence is Wyatt Earp.
With its lockstep commitment to firearms, the Indiana GOP has descended into a dark corner of the human condition. And with the upcoming, gun-toting state convention, that corner will become even darker.
