Bishop Dwenger has a chance to do today what only two Fort Wayne boys high school golf teams have ever done:
Win a state championship.
The Saints were tied for fourth after Tuesday's hot, windy opening round at Franklin's Legends of Indiana Golf Course. They had a score of 304.
Columbus North was first at 299. Carmel was second at 302 with Hamilton Southeastern third at 303.
Fort Wayne Central Catholic won the 1959 state championship. Northrop won it all in 1984.
Bishop Dwenger was led by Callahan Elzey, who was tied for 17th with a 3-over 75. Then came John Hope, tied for 22nd at 76. Patrick Allgeier and Spencer Gillig both shot 77s. James Wagner had an 82.
Homestead was 11th at 319. It was led by Nick Myers' 77.
Two Fort Wayne area individuals also are playing today. Canterbury's Michael Brothers and Heritage's Nick Bienz both shot 76s.
Evansville Central's Dylan Meyer and Columbus North's Michael VanDeventer were tied for first at 2-under 70.
