25 firefighters graduated from FWFD Academy Friday

Friday morning 22 Fort Wayne Fire Department recruits and three Huntington Fire recruits graduated form the Fort Wayne Fire Academy.

It was the culmination of 18 weeks of training. Mayor Tom Henry thanked the men for joining the fire department and said the citizens of Fort Wayne will be safer for the new recruits.

Fort Wayne Fire Chief Eric Lahey reminded the men that they must always try their hardest to serve the citizens of the community. He told the recruits that starting Monday the second phase of their training will start as they move out to their new posts in various fire stations across the community. For the next year the firefighters will be work through their probationary period. For the next three years, they will go through their journeyman training.

“As the mayor said you have a long and rewarding career one you can look back on and say you did your best job to make the city of Fort Wayne a safer place, congratulations,” Lahey said.

Graduating firefighter Robert Taylor was the class spokesman, and he thanked the instructors on behalf of the class for the rigorous training and the opportunity to serve the citizens of Fort Wayne. He challenged his fellow classmates to keep their quickness and hustle on the job.

“Be quick to do what needs to be done and don't wait for someone else to do it,” Taylor said.

He also encouraged them never top stop learning and always be open to new ideas.

After the swearing-in, a brief reception was held for the new firemen. Monday they will start their new careers with the city.
