Bicyclist struck, in critical condition

Sunday, July 27, 2014 - 2:56 pm

A boy was critically injured when he rode a bicycle through a red light and was struck by an SUV, according to the Fort Wayne Police Department.

Police responded to a report of a bicyclist struck in the intersection of St. Joseph Boulevard and Tennessee Avenue at 6:40 p.m. Saturday. Officers found the unresponsive bicyclist down in the road. He was struck by a southbound SUV, according to a news release from FWPD spokesman Michael Joyner.

The preliminary investigation, based on witness accounts, determined that the bicyclist was eastbound on Tennessee when he disregarded a red traffic signal, entered the intersection and was struck by the SUV, according to the release. The boy was taken to a local hospital where he was determined to be in critical condition. The SUV's driver was not injured.

This incident remains under investigation by the FWPD and the Allen County prosecutor's office.
