EAST CHICAGO, Ind. — The world's largest steelmaker is ramping up a blast furnace that is the centerpiece of its century-old steelmaking complex in northwestern Indiana.

ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor East bills its No. 7 blast furnace as the biggest in the Western Hemisphere. The Times of Munster reports (http://bit.ly/1tPwmOu ) ArcelorMittal Americas CEO Louis Schorsch told analysts Monday the furnace is about halfway through the process of ramping back up after $70 million in planned maintenance.

He says the furnace will give the company about 1,000 tons per day of additional hot metal. The furnace was built in in 1980 and relined in 2003.

ArcelorMittal's North American steel production dropped by 1.7 percent to 6.2 million tons last quarter, largely because of the Indiana furnace work and an unplanned outage at its Cleveland mill.
