Letter to the editor: The new terrorist who are the greatest threat

Wednesday, August 13, 2014 - 12:01 am

In response to the letter “It is easier for government to oppress an unarmed populace” by Ric Runestad:

Runestad opens his letter with the statement, “As our government grows more tyrannical and authoritarian ...”

Farther into his letter he says, “The founders were very clear on why they wanted the population to be armed: It was their very wise distrust of government.”

And in his ending statement he says, “So why the push for disarming? For the same reason that Mao Zedong, Vladimir Lenin and Fidel Castro disarmed their victims. It is easier to oppress an unarmed populace.”

A new study came out that was done for the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Response to Terrorism by the University of Maryland for the Department of Homeland Security.

It concluded that the greatest terrorist threat to America isn’t radical Muslims — it’s right wing radical groups right here in the United States.

According to writer JT Eberhard: “What the team discovered was that the notion of Islamic extremists plotting to blow up buildings was far less likely than homegrown so-called ‘sovereign citizens’ who stockpile weapons and hold a seething resentment toward the federal government. Consequently, 86 percent of those interviewed agreed that this movement posed a ‘serious terrorist threat,’ the highest of any group inquired about.”

From the language Runestad uses in his letter, it appears he harbors “a seething resentment toward the federal government,” a prime requirement for a “sovereign citizen.”
