Reader interview: Janet Evanovich always a fun read

Saturday, August 16, 2014 - 11:18 pm

Editor's note: This week's Page Turner reader interview is with Lannie Ruiz-Connelly, owner of The Bookmark bookstore on North Anthony Boulevard north of Crescent Avenue.

"Before I went on vacation, I read 'The 17 Day Diet,' by Dr. Mike Moreno, and hoped I could get into the nitty-gritty. But I also love Janet Evanovich — she's such fun — and read 'The Nines.'

"In this book ('The Nines'), Stephanie Plumb has lost her job and is looking for another. Her grandma suggested she work for her cousin, a bondsman, trying to bring in people skipping their bonds. It's family oriented as Stephanie gets educated in catching those people. Her old boyfriend helps her. He's a very good character, and now they're seeing each other again.

"I also read a lot of Nora Roberts' books. They're fun and have good story lines. I swore I'd never read a romance novel — but Nora Roberts is different. I read her 'Carolina Moon' in three days after it was recommended by a customer. It has a lot of suspense, good characters and very descriptive writing. For example, when she writes about a landscaping place with its soils and mixtures, you're right there. I can picture the homes. It's pretty cool. I like her."

"I've never been a Sue Grafton fan. I can't help myself. But Janet Evanovich makes me laugh. At an airport recently, people wanted to know what I was laughing at because I was laughing so hard. My house has books in every room. It's hard having access to all these books: I can't read while I work. Customers are always recommending books, and we have kind of a dialogue.

"I have always been a reader. I grew up out in the country, and we always had encyclopedias to read. My siblings and I tried to find the most unusual things we read about and share them. I remember winning with 'platypus'! I grew up with Nancy Drew and the Hardy boys. As a teenager it was magazines about our current stars. I have always loved reading.

"A favorite book is 'Watchers,' by Dean Koontz. It's very well-written and so descriptive. Another is John Grisham's 'The Client.' I've always liked courtroom dramas, and Grisham tells a really good story — with cause and effect."
