Restaurant Notes: You'll soon see a Big Eyed Fish on Hillegas Road

To celebrate its 10-year anniversary, Big Eyed Fish is opening a second location at 3001 Hillegas Road, a little south of Butler Road. It's attached to a gas station and is located where a frozen yogurt shop used to be.The new store will be more of a Big Eyed Fish express, serving mostly carry out, said Megan Bryant, daughter of the owner, Tony Bryant. There will be a few tables inside for dining-in.

It's expected to open mid-September. Hours have not been set yet.Sam Filippou, the owner of the longstanding Rib Room, 1235 E. State Blvd., has sold the building, but don't despair — he says patrons will see very few changes in their dining experience.

Filippou sold the building to local real estate investors Matt, Kurt and Chris Henry.

Some changes are being planned, including a significant renovation of the building's exterior and the west side of the restaurant, known as the family room. That area of the restaurant will be remodeled and renamed Nick’s Martini & Wine Bar, which is fitting because the restaurant was once known as Nick’s Rib Bar, and later as Nick & Von’s Rib Room, named after Nick Stamanis and Von Filippou. Nick and Von are both deceased; Von’s son, Sam, took over in 1992.

Sam Filippou decided earlier this year to sell the building, which was time-consuming and expensive to maintain, and concentrate more on the restaurant. He approached the Henrys, who were long-time patrons, about buying the building and letting him lease it The Henrys agreed.

“We had an opportunity to sell the real estate, but also to continue owning and operating the restaurant as we have for the past 55 years," Filippou said in a news release. “It was the best of both worlds: The Henry brothers will do what they do best, which is buying and fixing up commercial buildings; and we’ll continue doing what we do best, which is offering the best in fine dining.”

“My brothers and I couldn't be more excited about the future of the Rib Room,” Matt Henry said in a news release. “We’ve been patronizing the restaurant for a long time, and when the opportunity to buy the building presented itself, well, we jumped at it.”You can ride your bike with others to several downtown pubs and eateries by signing up for the first RideGreen event, which begins at 2 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Wells Street Bridge.

The U.S. Green Building Council Indiana Chapter Northeast is hosting the event, which includes stops at The Green Frog, O'Sullivans Irish Pub, the Mad Anthony Brewing Company, Calhoun Street Soups, Salads and Spirits, J.K. O'Donnell's, the Dash-In and the Deck.

The purpose of the event is to highlight Fort Wayne businesses and promote awareness of environmental issues. The USGBC educates about and promotes sustainable lifestyles, developments and building practices.

The cost for the bicycle pub tour is $10 for USGBC members and $15 for nonmembers. The cost includes a T-shirt. The breakfast and lunch eatery on the 13th floor is known for its spectacular views. Indiana Michigan spokesman Tracy Warner said the cafe is owned by food contractor Sodexo, and it was a business decision by Sodexo to close the cafe. Indiana Michigan Power is a tenant in One Summit Square.The Pizza Hut at 1233 W. State Blvd. has reopened, offering carry-out, delivery and drive-through service.Sample eight appetizers and small-bite food dishes and take home the recipes by attending the Small Bite Delights class 5:50-7:30 p.m. Sept. 4 at the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory, 1100 S. Calhoun St. A local gourmet chef will prepare the food. Registration deadline is Thursday. Cost: $39/public; $29/conservatory member or volunteer. Ages 15 and older. Minimum 10, maximum 32.
