A 20-year-old city man was fatally shot early this morning, possibly in a game of Russian roulette.
Fort Wayne Police were called to 2626 Carver Court around 4:45 a.m. for a shooting, and arrived to find the man inside the home critically injured from a gunshot wound to his “upper extremity,” as police spokeswoman Liza Thomas explained. The victim was transferred in critical condition to Parkview Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Scanner traffic at the time of the incident indicated the victim suffered a gunshot under his chin, though Thomas could only confirm the head was the location of the man's injuries and not that it was due to a gunshot.
Police don't know if foul play was involved.
Police questioned at least three witnesses at police headquarters on Creighton Avenue, and heard contrasting accounts of events, Thomas said.
“There are some conflicting stories on what actually was going on prior to the incident,” Thomas said. “We've heard that they were playing a game, but some of the actions of the other witnesses are leading us to broaden our investigation.”
Thomas said at least five people were inside the home at the time of the shooting, and there could have been drinking involved.
Russian roulette is a game of chance in which players place a round in a revolver, spin the cylinder, put the gun against their head and pull the trigger.
Whether the victim did indeed succumb to injuries sustained as a result of his participation in the lethal game will likely be learned from further investigation, Thomas said, and in an autopsy through the Allen County Coroner's Office.
