Page Turner reader profile: Shakespeare is ‘amazing,' says North Side senior

Editor's note: This week's Page Turner interview is with Adam Reavis, a senior at North Side High School.

“I'm not reading a lot of books right now because I'm busy with schoolwork. But I did read and enjoy ‘Sex God,' by Rob Bell. He's a pastor in Michigan — the head of a radical church.

“In this book, he writes how your relationship with other people affects how you see yourself. I believe that's true; and how people relate to each other appeals to me. He discusses the spiritual aspects of relationships and your own relationship with God. I like this book.

“I want to be a teacher, possibly of journalism (I'm on the yearbook staff at school) or possibly math. I've done well in mathematics. But I want to do something with English.

“I've read both ‘Romeo and Juliet' and ‘Othello' and loved them. I loved the fact that in ‘Othello' Shakespeare went against the grain and wrote about an African as a good man and Iago, who was white, the bad one. He wasn't afraid of offending. That's how I feel: You write how you feel!

“I love Shakespeare's writing. It's so poetic — it's amazing. He has inspired me to write, and I've written a lot. Yes, I saw the movie ‘Romeo and Juliet,' the one with Leonardo di Caprio, but I didn't enjoy it, and I've not seen the Zeffirelli version.

“One of my all-time favorite books is ‘The Jungle,' by Upton Sinclair. I heard about it in journalism class while learning about the period of muckraking, and I got caught up in it. And it still has merit. It exposes what it was like for immigrants, and there's nothing I like more than someone exposing something that's wrong.

“I enjoy comic books very much; the main reason, I think, is because they're limitless; they have so much illusion. ‘Uncanny X-Men' is an example. There are different stories with ongoing mutants fighting crime. It's a series, is well-written and has substantial plots.

“I like superheroes with supernatural powers — and outcasts. And there's sometimes injustice in the world (that) they tackle, and they don't get appreciated. I like these characters.”
