SOUTH BEND — Notre Dame coach Mike Brey called a play to start the second half in an effort to get Ben Hansbrough going. It worked.
The 6-3 guard, who fell hard on his back in the first half, cut inside for a basket to get going, and that got Notre Dame going. The basket started a 13-2 run, sparking the Fighting Irish to an 82-62 win over Long Beach State on Thursday night.
Hansbrough followed that basket up with a steal, a pass inside for a dunk by Tyrone Nash for one of his seven assists, then capped the spurt with a three-pointer to extend the Notre Dame (3-0) lead to 50-37.
“His drives are really important for us,” Brey said. “That's an important thing in our offense now.”
Hansbrough scored seven of his 11 points in the first 5:08 of the second half before he twisted his ankle and had to leave for a few minutes. He wasn't available to talk to the media after the game because he was in an ice bath.
Luke Harangody finished with 29 points and 12 rebounds, making 7 of 10 shots in the second half after going 6 of 13 from the floor in the first half.
“I kind of just rushed things. I had point-blank shots and just rushed them,” Harangody said. “In the second half we were able to change things up.”
The Irish outshot the 49ers (2-1) 64 percent to 38 percent in the second half. Long Beach State also had 12 turnovers in the second half after just five in the first half.
Tory Jackson had 13 points, Tim Abromaitis added 11 and Jonathan Peoples scored 10.
Larry Anderson led Long Beach State with 20 points.
