Part-time movie star on K's bench
Thomas was a double in hockey scenes for “The Love Guru.”
of The News-Sentinel

Sometime on a road trip this season, Leo Thomas is going to hear abuse from his teammates 10 times worse than he will from any opposing fans.

That's just because they're all jealous.

Trainer Shawn Dundon controls the video selection on bus trips, but he's been saving “The Love Guru” for one of the longer rides. The film was voted the Golden Raspberry as the worst movie of 2008, but Thomas says he had a blast working as an extra in the hockey scenes.

Rated PG-13 for a lot of raunchy language, the movie stars Mike Myers as the love guru who is trying to fix the love life of Toronto Maple Leafs star Darren Roanoke, played by Romany Malco. Thomas serves as Malco's double in the hockey scenes.

“We have a pro tournament in Toronto every summer, and at the last tournament there was a guy looking for guys to be in the movie,” Thomas said.

“It just turned out the lead guy was a black hockey player, and he saw me warming up and said, ‘You should come out tomorrow morning.' There were probably seven guys going for the part, and I knew all of them.”

Thomas was one of three selected as doubles for Malco. He took care of the skating, stick-handling and scoring while the other two were used for stunt doubles.

“When you watch the movie you can tell the difference,” Thomas said. “You can tell how the guy is skating which guy is playing the part.”

Thomas dominates the hockey scenes, succeeding with several moves and trick shots that would likely get him killed during a regular game.

The movie was filmed during the late summer of 2007, and Thomas missed the first four games of the season with Bloomington. He said he made more money in a month-and-a-half of filming than he did that entire season.

“I felt like I was dreaming every day I was filming that movie, hanging out with movie stars,” he said. “It was something I couldn't give up. It was a once-in-a-lifetime thing I had to do.”

Rookie Travis Whitehead was heading into his junior season at Buffalo State when he was invited to the tryout and invited three of his teammates to go along. He served as an extra and appears in the background of several scenes.

Thomas had to report each day by 6 a.m. to makeup at Toronto's Air Canada Centre, and filming sometimes lasted until 1 a.m. Often the players sat around all day in the Maple Leafs' dressing room waiting. Sometimes it took 10 hours to shoot one shot in the movie, Thomas said.

“Certain days we'd say we are working on these three plays but something would happen and it would take us about 10 hours,” Thomas said. “Switching the cameras around would take two hours. I sat in the locker room once for 14 hours, playing cards and wearing half of my gear. It was exactly like a hockey team, which is why the actors loved it. They got a little taste of how we are in the dressing room, and all the jokes that we have.”

The payoff, Thomas said was getting his Maple Leafs jersey signed by everyone and attending the Toronto premier. Even the extra grief he knew he'd take from his teammates was worth it.

“Some guys say it was a pretty bad movie, but they know it would have been amazing experience,” Thomas said.

Roster changes

The Komets put goaltender Nick Boucher on the 30-day injured reserve list Thursday, retroactive to Monday, with his broken finger. They will keep Tyler Sims as an emergency backup to Tim Haun. That will allow them to activate defenseman Kevin Bertram today.

The Komets have also agreed to terms with forward Justin Chwedoruk, and he is expected to be in the lineup for tonight's game against Muskegon. Rookie forward Travis Whitehead was placed on waivers to make room for Chwedoruk.
