Pandemic preparedness

While it remains to be seen if today's weather affects this year's IHSAA girls basketball sectionals, one thing for certain is that anything can happen once the tournament gets under way tonight.
From a fan's perspective, the IHSAA Class 3A Sectional 22 at Wayne High School is a dream-like tourney.

After a difficult season on the court and off, the Bishop Luers girls basketball team is favored to win the Class 2A Woodlan Sectional. The Knights have won the title two years in a row and have played the toughest schedule in the field.
Before Canterbury can win its third straight girls Class A state basketball championship, the Cavaliers will have to win the Hamilton Sectional. And any hopes the opposition has of the 18-2 Cavaliers looking forward has been squashed.
Homestead dominated much of the South Side girls swim sectional Saturday, in particular the freestyle events, as it cruised to a relatively easy victory.
It was like a neighborhood brawl Saturday at the Carroll wrestling sectional. There were no surprises, no gimmick moves. Nearly all the top wrestlers had already faced off multiple times this season and in some cases, on a weekly basis in the off-season.
Carroll won its 10th straight game, a 54-40 win over DeKalb in boys basketball action Saturday. The win improved the Chargers' record to 14-2 overall and 5-1 in the Northeast Hoosier Conference.
♦Janelle Moss had 15 points in Columbia City's 53-48 win over Huntington North.
The secret to wrestling success, Harding's Cedric Morrison said, is really no secret at all.
Anyone who has ever seen Hillary Strock compete in a gymnastics meet knows she'd be good with kids. The Northrop junior is so expressive with her face and body, it's easy to see her love for the sport and the joy she has in competing.
Note: This week's top area games include:
♦Concordia Lutheran's Brannon Springer won the all-around with a 37.825 but the Cadets lost to Northrop 106.75-102.675.
Teenagers can be contaminated with a lot of negative emotions. They can feel aggression, anger, depression and a lack of self-worth. On a basketball team, the worst emotions are selfishness and indifference.
MONROE — The Whitko wrestling team lounged matside Wednesday night, having already dispatched Homestead 39-27 in the first round of the Adams Central Regional.
♦Shane Merryman scored 37 points and had 13 rebounds, while Tyler Ault poured in 33 points and handed out 10 assists as Carroll routed Leo 118-75.
The girls swimming postseason starts Thursday. For some the goal is to swim their best in hopes of making it to the state championship meet.
The road to a second consecutive IHSAA girls basketball Class 3A state championship for Elmhurst took a decisive twist Monday, as the Trojans found out what team will be its first tournament opponent.
The draw, at least, favors Homestead in Wednesday's Adams Central team wrestling regional. Everything else depends on performance.
The Carroll Sectional wrestling championship Saturday wasn't a dual meet, but it had that flavor.
Barry Humble jangled. Have you ever heard such a thing at a wrestling sectional?
♦Columbia City earned a 57-51 win over New Haven. Janelle Moss scored 16 points to lead the Eagles.
Northrop faced a Marion team Saturday it had last beaten on the road nearly 25 years ago.
Usually when it comes to high school sports, being a home-school student is a big disadvantage, but not in high school hockey.
Let somebody else waffle over expectations. Justin Beck deals in optimistic reality. The Leo senior wrestler understands the postseason stakes.
Trailing 42-35 to Bishop Luers at the end of the third quarter Thursday night, Snider girls basketball coach Ryan Gould told his team to hold Luers to eight points or fewer in the fourth quarter.
About the time Tara Cahill finds herself rocketing toward the bottom is when she knows she's on top of her game.
♦Tabitha Gerardot scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds to lead Canterbury to an 83-46 win over Fremont.
♦Caitlin Radke of Carroll scored a 37.30 to earn all-around honors in the Chargers' 106.00-105.70 win over Northrop.
What can Tony Lovejoy do? The Bishop Luers senior wrestler wins all his matches, dominates everybody, drops down a weight class, from 125 to 119, and sees his state ranking fall from No. 2 to No. 6.
Norwell girls basketball coach Eric Thornton watched film of his team's last-second win over Carroll three weeks ago and marveled at the confidence.
It's difficult enough to win the Summit Athletic Conference basketball championship. To seek to do so while going unbeaten is nearly unthinkable.
Akilah Sims scored 20 points and Brielle Wattley added 18 to lead the Snider Panthers to a 67-56 win over DeKalb in girls basketball action Tuesday.
Norwell's Jenelle Wilson knows the old adage about there being no friends on the basketball court. But for a brief time Tuesday night, Wilson and her teammates set that aside.
