The Red Cross of Northeast Indiana deployed its Emergency Response Vehicle on Tuesday with two volunteers to help emergency crews at the site of a train derailment-chemical spill/fire in Ligionier. Four other volunteers are also in Noble County to assist. The volunteers will provide food and water to the nearly 200 emergency workers.
A freight train hauling hazardous materials derailed Tuesday, causing a tanker to burst into flames that belched yellow smoke and prompting the evacuation of a handful of nearby homes. Twenty-two cars came off the rails at around 5:30 a.m., about 40 miles northwest of Fort Wayne.
No injuries were reported.
