Man dies in Fort Wayne shooting

Friday, May 4, 2012 - 10:42 am

A man died after being shot late Thursday night on Fort Wayne's south side, police said.

Fort Wayne Police responded at about 11:04 p.m. to the report of a possible shooting in the 1300 block of West Wildwood Avenue, just west of Broadway, police spokeswoman Raquel Foster said in a statement. Police found a man lying in the street with an apparent gunshot wound, the statement said.

The man, who was not identified in the statement, was determined to be in critical condition at the scene but later died from his injuries at a local hospital, Foster said in the statement.

At least one witness reported seeing two vehicles leaving the area at a high rate of speed immediately after the gunfire, the statement said. The vehicles were described as a blue-colored Chevy Impala with tinted windows and a gray-colored pickup with an extended cab, according to the statement.

Police do not have a description of any possible suspect in the shooting, the statement said. The statement also did not say how many shots were fired.

The Allen County Coroner's Office will determine exactly how the man died and make a ruling on whether the shooting was a homicide. If the shooting is ruled a homicide, it would be Allen County's eighth of 2012, according to News-Sentinel archives.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, Allen County Prosecutor's Office and county coroner, the statement said.
