EVANSVILLE — A southwestern Indiana sheriff says two of his deputies fatally shot a rural Evansville man after he threw a hatchet and other items at them.

Vanderburgh County Sheriff Eric Williams says the deputies tried to subdue the man with stun guns early Tuesday before he threw a hatchet at them and they immediately opened fire and killed him.

The Vanderburgh County Coroner's office identified the dead man as 55-year-old Lindal M. Johnson.

The Evansville Courier & Press reports Johnson also threw a pipe at the deputies in a confrontation that lasted less than 20 minutes outside Johnson's home.

Williams says neither of the deputies was injured. They were investigating a criminal mischief case reported just after midnight.
