Notre Dame player profile: Tyler Eifert

Each day this week, The News-Sentinel will profile a Notre Dame football player leading up to the BCS National Championship game Monday in Miami.

Wednesday, January 2, 2013 - 6:48 am

What: No. 80 senior tight end

Where: Bishop Dwenger High School

2012 stats: Caught a team-leading 44 receptions for 624 yards and four touchdowns.

The skinny: Eifert became the most productive tight end in Fighting Irish history this season and was recognized as the nation's best by receiving the John Mackey Award.

Head coach Brian Kelly says: “Coming back to get his degree says so much about the Notre Dame football player and how important it is to have their degree, but to also play at the level that Tyler's played, to break the kind of records with the great tight ends that have been here at Notre Dame is an amazing feat. So I think it's a combination of a guy that understands Notre Dame, understands the value of a great education and wanted to be on a championship football team. I think he epitomizes in terms of what we look for as a Notre Dame football player.”
