Smith currently is the second-leading scorer (11.7) and rebounder (5.4) for the Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 9 in the Associated Press national poll and No. 10 in the USA Today/Coaches poll.
He's started Butler's first 20 games this season and 87 of the Bulldogs' last 89 contests, including both NCAA Final Four games in 2011. The 6-11 center was Butler's leading scorer and second-leading rebounder a year ago.
A finance major from Zionsville, Smith is one of 30 finalists for the 2012-13 Senior CLASS Award, presented for notable achievement in community, classroom, character and competition.
Smith ranks fourth in the Atlantic 10 Conference in field goal percentage (.575), and he stands sixth on Butler's all-time list for field goal shooting (.553). He's one of nine players who share Butler's single season record for games played (38). Smith is the only current collegiate player who has seen action in two NCAA Division I national championship games.
Also named to the District V team were Cody Zeller and Jordan Hulls of Indiana, Aaron Craft of Ohio State and Ben Averkamp of Loyola.
The first team honorees from District V, which represents Division I schools from Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ontario and Manitoba, will be considered with All-Academic picks from seven other districts for Academic All-America selection, which will be released in February.
