A Fort Wayne Police officer allegedly saw a man fire gunshots Thursday in the 4400 block of Gaywood Avenue.
The officer was parked in an unmarked squad car at 6:29 p.m. Thursday in the 4300 block of Gaywood when the suspect allegedly left a house a block away and fired a round from a semiautomatic handgun into the air, according to a report. The man fired two more times into the air as he went across the street and into a house, according to the report.
A backup officer arrived and detained the suspect outside. The suspect, whose name was redacted from the report, was identified by the first officer as the one who fired the shots, according to the report.
Police went into the home and found a handgun magazine containing five rounds on top of the refrigerator, a box of handgun ammunition in a closet and a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson SW4OVE in the basement, and later an officer found a .40-caliber shell casing on the sidewalk near where the suspect allegedly fired a shot, according to the report.
Because the man was previously convicted of a felony charge of battery/strangulation, he was charged with felony carrying a handgun without a license, according to the report.
