North Side is hottest team in area heading into post-season

Saturday, February 23, 2013 - 9:11 am

North Side boy's basketball coach Shabaz Khaliq spoke with The News-Sentinel following his team's win over Homestead on Friday.

On a game where foul trouble was a problem:

More than anything the most important thing is keeping a positive attitude. It goes back to our practices and open gym, because we don't call any (fouls). They do a lot of whining and complaining, but it is to get them prepared for this. Can you persevere when calls aren't going your way? Can you persevere when you feel like you aren't getting the benefit of the doubt? Tonight, I thought they did a good job, earlier in the year you wouldn't have seen that.

On the play of his bench:

Our seniors came out and got us started off well, including some guys that don't see a lot of minutes. They did a good job of putting us in a position where when our other guys came in, we were already doing well. That's all you can ask for from those guys, they gave us good energy. That's the key for us, our bench.

On Dwight Richards coming over to North Side from Bishop Luers:

Dwight is hungry to showcase his ability. He feels like he hasn't had an opportunity to do that. Coming over here was a fresh start for him. He came in to a bunch of guys that share the basketball. (Junior point guard) Tre'Vion Crews is the epitome of that. That kid is always looking for the open man and a lot of times that is Dwight.

On what makes Richards so good, particularly from the outside:

Part of that is dribble penetration and some of that is match-ups. When traditional bigs are matched up against him, he is able to stretch the floor. When he drifts outside, it can be tough for a big defender who is more comfortable in the post to realize he is out there. Then, if they close out too strong, he has the ability to get to the basket and strong enough to finish.
