Imagine schools, Johnson Academy learn appeal dates for charter revocation

Friday, March 8, 2013 - 5:48 pm

Three local charter schools have been notified when their appeals will be heard by Ball State University regarding the potential revocation of their charters.

Imagine MASTer Academy will have its appeal heard April 4, while Imagine Schools on Broadway will have its appeal heard April 16, according to Rachel Cirullo, a spokeswoman for Imagine Schools.

Steve Bollier, the school leader at Timothy L. Johnson Academy, said that school's hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. on April 18.

According to Cirullo, the hearings will be held in Muncie on Ball State's campus, and they will not be open to the public.

The contracts of the three charters will end June 30. The Fort Wayne schools were among seven charter schools in the state who were notified that their contracts would not be renewed.

The decisions, affecting approximately half of Ball State's charter schools, were determined using a new accountability framework finalized by the charter office last summer. The framework, developed over the course of two years, was presented by the office to all Ball State authorized schools on June 27, 2012.

According to Indiana Department of Education records for the 2011-2012 school year, the three charter schools enrolled more than 1,500 students, with Imagine MASTer Academy, 2000 N. Wells St., having 758 students in grades K-8. Imagine Schools on Broadway, 2320 Broadway, had 443 students in grades K-5, while Timothy L. Johnson Academy, 7908 S. Anthony Blvd., had 305 students in grades K-8.
