Indiana jumped to a 9-0 lead in less than four minutes to advance to Sunday's East Region third round with a 83-62 victory over James Madison Friday at Dayton.
Here are some of the keys to the victory:
1. Yogi Ferrell
The freshman point guard hit his first six shots, driving and shooting at will against a defense that ignored him. James Madison had no answer and, as it turned out, no chance.
2. Defensive intensity
The Hoosiers never gave James Madison an easy look. While they didn't get a lot of steals (three), they disrupted the Dukes into offensive futility. James Madison needed 30 minutes to break 30 points. It shot 29 percent in the first half and never recovered.
3. Focus
Indiana showed from the opening tip it wouldn't take James Madison lightly. Dukes freshman guard Andre Nation said before the game he wanted to play IU at its best. That's yet another example of beware getting what you wish for.
4. Bench contribution
Coach Tom Crean went with a nine-man rotation until the final minutes, when he cleared the bench. Derek Elston after sitting out the Big Ten tourney with a sore knee. Maurice Creek got in late for his first NCAA tourney experience after missing last year with an injury. Bench totals: 26 points, 13 rebounds.
5. Sharp shooting
Indiana made shots early and often, and never stopped. It shot 53.0 percent from the field, 39.0 percent from three-point range.
