Identities released of man killed in gunbattle, Fort Wayne Police officers

Friday, May 3, 2013 - 11:15 am

The Allen County coroner's office has released the name of a 22-year-old man shot and killed by police during a gunbattle in a Fort Wayne neighborhood Thursday. Meanwhile, the Fort Wayne Police Department has released the names of the officers involved.

Ryan J. Koontz is the 17th homicide victim in Allen County this year. An autopsy was performed Thursday afternoon.

Fort Wayne Police Chief Rusty York said Koontz was killed after officers were dispatched at around 8:22 a.m. to the 7700 block of Weymouth Court in the Wheatridge addition in reference to a possible suicide attempt.

A news release issued later Thursday by the police department said officers were notified that a resident at the home “was under the influence of a mind- or mood-altering drug(s) and that he was behaving irrationally, and that he had access to a firearm.”

Upon arrival, officers entered the home where the call originated and were fired upon, according to York. The officers then retreated from the residence. The 22-year-old, whose identity was expected to be released by the Allen County Coroner's Office today, left the home while firing indiscriminately, including at the officers, he said.

Koontz was shot by officers and no one else was injured.

The FWPD identified the officers late Friday morning as:

•Sgt. Shane C. Coleman, who oined the department Oct. 12, 1995;

•Sgt. Daniel N. Ingram, who joined the department March 25, 2002;

•Officer Kenneth H. Jameson, who joined the department Aug. 2, 2002;

•Officer Donald L. Lewis, who joined the department March 25, 2002.

The shooting remains under investigation by the FWPD, the Allen County Prosecutor's Office, the coroner's office, and the Indiana State Police.
