Homes evacuated during Evansville standoff

EVANSVILLE — Police evacuated several homes in an Evansville neighborhood during a nearly four-hour standoff with a man they worried was heavily armed.

Officers went to the home southeast of the city's downtown Wednesday evening seeking 33-year-old John Cannon on an arrest warrant for criminal confinement charges.

City police Sgt. Jason Cullum tells the Evansville Courier & Press that officers got Cannon's mother out of the house, but he refused to communicate with officers before a SWAT team fired tear gas inside several times. Cullum tells WFIE-TV that Cannon was in a basement crawl space when he stuck his hands out a vent opening to surrender.

Cullum says officers found Cannon with several rifles when he was arrested last year.

Cannon was jailed Thursday without bond.
