Tuesday, July 30, 2013 - 11:28 pm

A Fort Wayne youth baseball squad represented northeastern Indiana well recently in winning a state baseball championship in Indianapolis.

The St. Joe Central District 10 Senior League baseball champs topped Brownsburg 7-3 in the championship game at Franklin Township Little League diamonds.

John Tuttle threw a complete game in the title game, while Johnathan Weingartner earned the win in an 11-2 semifinal victory.

Drew Brelsfoard, Kolin Latham and Sammy Rykard each connected for home runs, while Tuttle delivered a grand slam in the tournament.

The St. Joe Central Senior League Champs now go on to Peru, Ill., to play in the Senior League Baseball Regionals.

Before winning the state title, the St. Joe Central All Stars team had previously played a Hamilton Park team to win the District 10 Championship. They got by Hamilton Park in the double elimination finals with a 10-1 win in the final game.

The squad is comprised of 15- and 16-year-olds that competed in the Big League and Senior League teams of the St. Joe Township Little League.

Two seasons ago, nine of the 15 current players were on the 2011 Junior League team that finished runner-up in the regional competition.

Players on the team represent Blackhawk Christian, Northrop and Snider high schools.

Team members include Mike Ankenbruck, Brandon Bobilya, Drew Brelsfoard, Jordan Dickinson, Zane Griffith, Brock Hinton, Michael Kage, Kolin Latham, Nick Miller, Evan Paul, Reid Roemmich, Sammy Rykard, Adam Smith, John Tuttle and Johnathan Weingartner.

The team is managed by Sam Rykard and coached by Greg Hadden and Alex Leavell. Rykard and Hadden have each coached at St. Joe for over 12 years.

Leavell, a former St. Joe player and a junior at Indiana University, plans to teach and coach in the future.
