If Derek Jeter is a movie, does that make A-Rod a viral video?

Tuesday, July 30, 2013 - 5:11 am

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel was all over ESPN after being kicked out of a frat party at rival University of Texas over the weekend. Responding to the coverage, Manziel tweeted, “Last time I checked double digit wins columns and championships are what matters.”

His follow-up tweets about the pursuit of a college degree must have since been deleted.

Manziel later went out in public wearing a Tim Tebow jersey. Wouldn't you know it, photographers immediately started preying.

Good Yankee, Bad Yankee

Derek Jeter returned from the injured list to the New York Yankees and hit a home run on his first pitch back.

“He's a movie,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

Yankees teammate Alex Rodriguez, meanwhile, continues to prep for his movie, “Castaway 2.”

Liar, liar, bat's on fire

Milwaukee Brewers slugger Ryan Braun accepted his season-ending suspension for his connection to the Biogenesis performance-enhancing drug investigation. He had previous emphatically denied using PEDs. It's good to see Lance Armstrong's legacy cross over into all sports.

The Brewers, meanwhile, will give away $10 vouchers for food, beverage, tickets or merchandise to fans who attend an August home game. Obviously, they're using attendance enhancers.

Search for clean players concludes

The National Baseball Hall of Fame inducted three players this year: Jacob Ruppert Jr., Hank O'Day and James “Deacon” White. In order to honor players who aren't suspected of performance-enhancing drugs, the hall only had to look for guys who've been dead 70 years.

Good speed in the lane

North Carolina's leading men's basketball scorer, P.J. Hairston, has been suspended from the team after being stopped for driving 93 mph in a 65 mph zone. I guess that dispels the notion that college players are never called for traveling anymore.

Houston no longer his problem

The Detroit Tigers acquired relief pitcher Jose Veras from the Houston Astros to try to shore up their bullpen. Veras was the closer for the Astros, who have generally made a habit of leaving everything open.
