Indiana Senate President Pro Tempore David Long (R-Fort Wayne) on Wednesday appointed four members to a panel that will review school performance standards as directed by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) released last week. The Accountability System Review Panel, created under the MOU by the House, Senate, Gov. Mike Pence and the Indiana Department of Education will advise the State Board of Education in its assignment to create new designations of school performance, as required by a new law enacted this year.

The panel will consist of 17 members. The state education department, Senate, House and Pence will each appoint four members, with each entity's appointments including a teacher, principal, superintendent and a technical advisor. The superintendent of public instruction, Glenda Ritz, will also serve as a member of the panel.

Long's appointments include:

*Teacher: Melanie Park, Riverview Middle School, Huntington County Community School Corporation (2012 Indiana Teacher of the Year)

*Principal: Steve Baker, Bluffton High School

*Superintendent: Steven Yager, Southwest Allen County Schools

*Technical Advisor: Derek Redelman, Indiana Chamber of Commerce

“Each of these individuals brings an exceptional background that qualify them to assist the State Board of Education as they move forward with policy discussions related to school performance,” Long said in a news releasing announcing his appointments. “We are extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to tap into their expertise.”
