Recently, I requested a review copy of a celebrity cookbook, “Southern Favorites with a Taste of Hollywood,” by Donna Douglas.
Douglas played Ellie May on “The Beverly Hillbillies” TV series that also starred the late actors Buddy Ebsen and Irene Ryan.
The 292-page book is broken down into the usual categories, such as appetizers, salads, meats and desserts. What is unusual about this book is it also includes recipes from her friends, fans and co-stars.
Need a good brownie recipe? Check out Pat Boone's Blonde Brownies. How about apple cake? Angie Dickinson's Apple Oven Cake is sure to be a hit. Jethro's Lasagna is a meat dish supplied by her “Beverly” co-star, Max Baer, himself. Rhonda Fleming's Waldorf Salad also may be a hit at dinner parties, if not a conversation starter.
Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Debbie Reynolds, Gavin MacLeod and Ebsen also contributed recipes.
The cookbook includes photos of Douglas throughout her career and with her fans, some of her recipes (Donna's Chicken and Dumplings, Donna's Pecan Pralines), as well as humorous “memories from the cement pond.”
The cookbook was edited by Javetta Saunders, an author, vocalist and recording artist who also is a self-proclaimed fan of Douglas.
The book is available through Tate Publishing for $29.99. Visit www.tatepublishing.com for more information.
