Kids receive grant
Covering Kids & Families of Indiana received a $997,810 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to enroll and retain eligible Hoosier children in Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program, which will target Allen, Delaware, Kosciusko, Lake, LaPorte, Parke, St. Joseph and Vermillion counties. Vote for veterinarians
The Allen County SPCA is launching a campaign for its inaugural Veterinarian of the Year award. The public may vote for a favorite veterinary practice by making donations to the Allen County SPCA in the preferred veterinarian's honor. Each vote costs $1, and all proceeds benefit the shelter. Donations are tax deductible.
Donations may be made in person at any Allen County veterinarian's office through Oct. 20; by calling the shelter at 744-0454, Ext. 203, to make a credit card donation by phone; by visiting www.acspca.org/vote_vet.html and selecting the vet's practice from the drop-down box to make a donation using PayPal; or by mailing a check with the vet practice name in the memo line to Allen County SPCA, 4914 S. Hanna St., Fort Wayne, IN 46806.
Winners will receive a plaque to display in their office as well as a complimentary table at the Nov. 9 Allen County SPCA Catwalk fundraiser.
‘Shop for a cause’
Macy's will partner with the Women's Bureau and its Dress for Success Fort Wayne program to invite customers to participate in Macy's eighth annual national “Shop For A Cause” charity shopping event on Aug. 24. Rain barrels available
Allen County Soil and Water Conservation District will hold a rain barrel sale through July 24, with pickup at its office, 3718 New Vision Drive. The sale is open to all residents of Allen County and surrounding area. Cost is $60 for a 30-gallen plastic barrel and $80 for a 55-gallon plastic barrel, with oak barrels available. The Cellular Connection will donate 60,000 backpacks full of school supplies to children through its School Rocks Backpack Giveaway nationwide. Locally, the giveaway takes place noon-2 p.m. Aug. 3 at 6404 W. Jefferson Blvd.; 6821 Lima Road; 10132 Maysville Road; and 5956 Stellhorn Road. Backpacks are filled with pencils, paper, a pencil box, folders, glue and other supplies. Each store will donate 100-150 backpacks.
Program allows for more spay/neuter services
HOPE for Animals is able to complete 200 additional neuter or spay surgeries for $20 during July as part of its “Did You Know” campaign. Call 420-7729 and mention the “Did You Know” campaign when scheduling surgery.
