Alison Mansfield, a recent graduate of Homestead High School, was among 18 young people recognized as national Nestle Very Best in Youth honorees during a ceremony Saturday in Los Angeles.

Students were selected based on their academic achievements, extracurricular activities and community service, a news release said.

Each winner received a plaque, all expenses-paid trip to Los Angeles, a cash stipend and $1,000 for his or her charity. Mansfield, the daughter of Dr. Dennis and Michele Mansfield of Fort Wayne, has received many honors for starting Operation U.S. Troop Support, which sends letters, treats and personal hygeine items to U.S. troops serving overseas, and Operation Socks for our Troops, which sends socks to soldiers.
