BLOOMINGTON – Lilly King still wows 'em.

Did you expect anything less from Indiana's Olympic swimming gold medalist?

And then there's Hoosier All-America linebacker Tegray Scales, who reached a performance level the football program hasn't seen from his position in a generation.

Both were honored as IU's 2016-17 Athletes of the Year.

Let's just say it was a no-brainer.

King, an Evansville native, reached superstar level last August by winning a gold medal in the Olympic breaststroke, setting a record with a time of 1:04.93. She also was a member of the gold-medal-winning 4X100 medley relay. She won USA Swimming's Golden Goggle Award for Breakout Performer of the Year.

Then she returned for her sophomore season at IU and won four All-America honors. She repeated as the national champ in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. Her 200 time of 2:03.18 set American, NCAA and IU records.

Oh, she also was named Big Ten women's swimmer of the year after winning four events – the 100 and 200 breaststrokes, the 200 individual medley and the 400 medley relay.

Then there was Scales, who led the nation  with 93 solo tackles and 23.5 tackles for loss. He also led the Big Ten with 126 total tackles. He had nine games with double-figures in tackles, including six straight.

The result – Sports Illustrated named him a second-team All-America. He's the first IU linebacker to receive All-America honors since Van Waiters in 1987.

Scales also was named the Foster Farms Bowl defensive player of the game.

“Reaching our highest athletic potential and winning championships is a top priority for IU Athletics,” athletic director Fred Glass said in a statement, and Lilly King and Tegray Scales represent true competitive greatness.

“They are incredible athletes who serve as ideal standard bearers of our championship heritage.”
