Homestead senior Karissa McLaughlin had a good start to the week on Monday morning.

It was announced that McLaughlin, who averaged over 25 points and 5.6 assists for the state champion Spartans, has been named the Gatorade Girls Basketball Player of the Year for Indiana.

The annual award is one of the most prestigious in the state, largely considered second only to the Indiana Miss Basketball award. McLaughlin will find out next month if she is the recipient of that honor as well.
