A remake of the classic 1977 "Roots" miniseries begins this week on A&E. Tonight features the repeat of the two-hour premiere of Part 1, beginning at 7 p.m. The premiere highlights the birth of Kunta Kinte and his childhood. At 9 p.m., Part 2 airs. In this segment Kinte meets British soldiers who convince him to escape, but then finds out they are no better than his American slave family and attempts to run away. A doctor then takes him in, and Kinte begins courting the doctor's daughter.

This miniseries stars Roman Armstrong as Kinte, Laurence Fishburne as Alex Haley and Forest Whitaker as Fiddler.

The 1977 miniseries received 16 awards and starred LeVar Burton in the title role.
