Restaurant Notes: Fort Wayne enjoys sushi at Umi, Parkview Regional Medical Center
Umi Fort Wayne, 2912 Getz Road, is adding a West Coast spin to its menu with the sushirrito.
The sushirrito is sushi-grade fish, avocado, and other toppings in a seaweed wrap that’s dipped in tempura and fried.
Umi’s new winter menu also features seafood pancakes (okonomiyaki), grilled tuna cubes, tempura calamari, sautéed snapper, lobster tail lo mein, stuffed jalapeno tempura, fried tofu cubes, a half-dozen new sushi rolls including the Rock Roll that’s made with shrimp tempura, unagi tempura, asparagus, oysters and eel sauce.
Umi also has beef, pork, chicken, noodle dishes and a simple children’s menu.
One place we were surprised to see sushi was at Parkview Regional Medical Center. We hesitate to call its dining area a cafeteria with its nice decor and food stations.
While we were obsessed with the gelato bar and the blood orange sorbet we tried, we were there to see the recently added sushi bar. They were done rolling the sushi for the day, but they had prepared 7-ounce packages in the reach-in cooler: California Roll for $5.39, Blazing California Roll for $5.89 and Crispy Crab for $7.99.
A VEGAN HOLIDAY
PETA is hoping children have a happy meat-free holiday. To accomplish this, it has put up billboards near local elementary schools. The ads show a pig’s face alongside the words “I’m ME, Not MEAT. Kids: Ask Your Parents About Going Vegan This Holiday Season.”
The billboards are at 515 Ewing St. and 2401 W. Jefferson Blvd., near Bloomingdale Elementary School; at 4210 N. Wells St., near Franke Park Elementary; and at 4320 Ardmore Ave., near Indian Village Elementary.
