We like anything named after our floppy middle, but apparently that's not the origin of the name of the coming Potbelly Sandwich Shop. The company plans to open a franchise in Fort Wayne at the Coliseum Shoppes that also contains Wendy's Bridal and Half Price Books. The sign says the opening is "soonish," while the website lists April. The shops feature potbelly stoves, a reminder of the first shop's 1977 origins as a Chicago antique store where the owner also refurbished antique potbelly stoves, according to the company's website.
Their made-to-order sandwiches include their trademark A Wreck of salami, Angus roast beef, turkey, ham and Swiss cheese hand-sliced and layered with your choice of toppings. It also has Skinnys, made with less meat and cheese on "Thin Cut" bread that are under 400 calories. Plus it has hand-dipped shakes and smoothies with fresh fruit ingredients.

Congrats, Ivy Tech students
Eight Ivy Tech Community College Northeast culinary students will be traveling to Europe after winning the school's 20th annual European Competition on Jan. 13.
Winning students Lawrence Davis, John Croyle, Catrina Zepke, John O’Donnell, Bethany Sorich, Anisah Abdul-Azeez, Lydia Yaste and Aura Barrera were among 11 hospitality administration students in culinary arts or baking and pastry arts competing for a chance to win a scholarship that would pay for a trip to study the culinary arts in France.
Culinary students received a mystery basket of ingredients to turn into an appetizer, entrée and dessert in four hours. Baking and pastry students had 4½ hours to fill a decorated cake order and complete a fruit dessert, chocolate dessert, and yeast bread with one loaf and six dinner rolls.
Kitchen judges looked at technique and ability. Floor judges did blind taste tests of the completed meals.
The winning students will be asked to use what they learn to create the menu for this year’s A Reason to Taste, the college’s largest fundraiser, held in the fall.
