The 3802 Lima Road location will close March 22.

As we reported in January, the Aldi discount grocery store under construction on Coldwater Road will replace one of the Lima Road locations, and now we know the date that will happen: March 23.

The 18,397-square-foot store at 4750 Coldwater Road is under construction in Jo-Ann Plaza. The current store at 3802 Lima Road will close the day before, Greenwood Division Vice President Laura Bauer previously told us.

The company feels the new store near Northcrest Shopping Center is more convenient as it's off a main corridor, though people who left comments to our story were pretty skeptical about the ease of parking. The current store has its own parking lot that requires a slight turn onto Fernhill Avenue to get into it. The new store will be off the more congested Coldwater Road and is surrounded by lots of other shops; traffic can get pretty backed up when leaving the shopping plaza that way as two lanes of same-way traffic converge from different directions. At least that's how traffic flow has been. We'll see what happens when the store opens.

Customers at the new store will see more selections of organics, USDA Choice meats, the liveGfree gluten-free product line, which includes a variety of food from rice crisps snacks to frozen sandwiches, and "the SimplyNature line of products free from over 125 artificial ingredients and preservatives and the Never Any! line of meats free from antibiotics, added hormones and animal by-products," Bauer wrote previously in an email.

The company sent us a sampling of some of its products to promote the grand opening. In the interest of the public's right to know, we tasted some. The liveGfree Gluten Free Sea Salt Multiseed Crackers were nicely crisped and pretty healthy tasting with plenty of good grainy flavor. The random crackers we ate pretty well reflected the picture: very seedy looking – and we mean that in a good way.

A co-worker tried the Elevation Cranberry Almond (naturally flavored) Fruit & Nut Bar. "It was good," she said. "I would buy that." She likes cranberries and found plenty in the bar, which was moist, she said.

Now, the Moser Roth Privat Chocolatiers Dark 70% Cocoa bar was really calling our sweet tooth. A co-worker scoffed that a discount grocery could have this, but we found it smooth with no bitterness, just a nice coating left over in our mouth.

Aldi also has stores at 10007 Lima and 7325 S. Anthony Blvd. The company is not releasing its plans for those stores yet, Bauer previously wrote.

Aldi's Fort Wayne stores are open 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday.
